New Model Mileage Graphs
September 6, 2008 8:07 AM   RSS feed for this thread Subscribe

We just added a new graph to the top of the browse vehicle model pages.

It's a distribution of average MPG (or L/100km) across that model. Here's what it looks like:

model graph

The graph is rounding average MPGs to the nearest whole number, and average L/100km to the nearest half. If there isn't enough data for a particular model, the graph isn't shown.

These graphs should show you at a glance the most common fuel economy people are getting with that particular car. Please post here if you spot problems.

Just to head off the comments early: as we get more data, we'll break out engine and body types so you can see all Jettas (including gas and diesel and sedan and wagon), then all Jetta diesels (sedan and wagons), then just Jetta diesel wagons.

It might also be useful to include the EPA numbers on these graphs, just as a point of reference.

hmm, yeah, maybe when showing a specific model year we could bold the EPA combined estimate on the graph or show it in a different color. Then you'd see in a glance if most people are getting above or below the estimated mileage.

The more I think about adding EPA estimates the more difficult it gets. There are different estimates for automatic vs. manual, diesel vs. gas, etc. just within models. So until we we're sorting at that level, I'm not sure how we'd show EPA numbers on this graph.

What timing. Just last night I was explaining Fuelly to my wife and I suggested that fuelly would be helpful to someone looking to buy a used car because of data like that above in this post.

Thanks, pb and mathowie.
