Shortly before 150,000 miles, the engine started to misfire, and was only running on two cylinders. The camshaft oil ways had blocked, and starved the top end of the engine of oil. As a result, the hydraulic lifters for cylinders 3 and 4 could not operate, and therefore could not open the valves. The camshaft oil ways were cleared using a spray can of WD40, and a cheap engine flush was added to the oil. On start up the engine then ran on all cylinders. The oil and filter were changed, and the car has been running reasonably well (all things considered) in the 2,000 miles since this problem. The cams were badly scored, and there was quite possibly further damage. A makeshift oil catch tank has been fitted in an attempt to filter out any water/condensation; and quite a lot is being drained out!
