The roof racks and cargo box were on the roof the whole way. We drove through every type of weather and wind imaginable, over hills, across farm land, on Interstates and US highways at all different speeds. This probably helps account for the wild fluctuation in fuel economy from fill-up to fill-up.
Ex. Cruising across the mostly flat Upper Peninsula, at 60 mph with a tail wind, resulted in far better economy than tearing through lower Michigan at 68 mph in heavy snow with a stiff cross wind.
