Quest for 40 mpg

Was just browsing the fuelly forums and saw this. Draigflag is sadly like that dz302

Have a look at this video where he claims to have gotten 82mpg out of his Fiat Panda. He only got this because he drove to the top of a hill and then reset his trip and then drove down.

Everything seems to be a competion for Paul for some reason...... just ignore him.

customizable graph

I really like the idea of this. Whilst I can do a graph in excel, it would be nice to have one built in :)

Overinflating tires

Personally I stick to what either the car maker or the tyre manufacturer specifies.

The manufacturer has done many thousands of miles testing the cars and working out the best pressures for it so why mess with it?

Also, have any of you considered the pressure that you're putting that smaller contact patch under?

I went on a roadtrip through France this summer during some fairly warm weather (35 degrees celsius) and when pulling off the motorways for a rest the tyres were VERY grippy and when I got out they were almost too hot to touch. So would you really want all that heat going through a smaller contact patch? I think not!

DTMAce your reasoning for lowering tyre pressures is wrong. Sure on ice a bit more friction will help but what about in snow and slush where you want the tyre to cut through to the road base? It'll actually make things worse. Personally I run winter tyres anyway

Fuel consumption fiat panda

Have you checked tyre pressures elebelly80?

Another thing I would reccomend is to get it warm and give it some proper revs. At 4k it will still be tight and engines do need to be given some revs sometimes. I have a 1.2 500 and the best I've had is 53.6 and you should be able to beat that.

One thing I should also mention is that you've only done one fuelup and there is a big margin of error when you're just doing one. The best thing to do is brim the tank to the absolute max and then run it till it needs filling up again and fill it to the brim, then you will get a good idea of what it's actually doing. I suspect that you've filled the tank up to a higher level than you did on the last fuel up which has possibly made things look worse than they are.

Run a few tanks through it and let us know how you go.

Which gas brand is the best?

Yes the different ratings are a bit confusing.

You're certainly right that higher octane petrol only really helps with MPG on higher performance cars. On my car (A n/a Fiat 500) putting premium fuel in doing really seem to make any difference in terms of economy but in my wifes car which is turbocharged it makes a difference.

If you want to see bad quality fuel you should try fuel in Australia, it's just not as well refined as in Europe and IIRC the standards for quality are lower than elsewhere. Of course I could be talking crap but that's just my experience.
