Congratulations, well done dz302. Keep up the good work. I too don't hyper mile but work hard at maximizing my mileage for the commute route I drive to work. Good luck on hitting 40 MPG, that is ambitious and I hope you make it.

Good job on beating your record! I hit 38-39mpg at least 4 times with my 07 Matrix manual before I went out of my way and pulled off 40.7mpg. To do that I drove 440 miles (700 km) non-stop on secondary roads last fall. I don't think I can honestly beat it. The worst is I still had enough gas to probably hit 500 miles.

I noticed how you "only" got 30mpg in one of your latest fill-ups. How did you manage to put in 14 gallons in a tank that will take 11.9gal ? Lol I was thinking maybe you did that by mistake so you probably had a better tank.

The winter blend mixed with Canadian winter only gives me 26-28mpg right now. The worst I ever got was 24mpg. X(

Matrix, depends on what gallon measurement you used I think. I believe Canada uses a UK gallon vs the US gallon doesn't it? US gallon is 3.785 L vs UK gallon of 4.546 L. So... 11.9x 4.546 = about 54L divide that by the US 3.785 and you get 14.2 Gallons.

I used US so it doesn't make sense. His tank is 11.9 gal so 45L so there's no way he filled up with 14gal which would come to 53 liters.

You're forgetting about the vapour expansion chamber & pipework. If you 'vent & brim' you can easily exceed the tank's official volume in most vehicles. But this is not necessarily a good idea if it is a petrol vehicle.

MMUK, I normally fill the spout in my vehicles when I fill up, but that is rarely more than 1/2 a gallon in a passenger vehicle, maybe a gallon in a full sized truck or something with a long filler neck but more than 2 gallons seems way off the chart to me.

Filling the spout saved me once when I would have otherwise run out of gas. I was driving across Arizona at night and didn't stop for gas at the border since I still had half a tank. The next 200 miles didn't have a single open gas station (wee hours of the morning) when I finally found an open station I put 12.252 gallons into a 12.2 gallon tank by refilling the neck. My passenger was grateful that I made a habit of that when we pulled the manual and realized that I'd filled with more than the official capacity of the tank, otherwise we might have had to push it the last mile or so.

Yes, but that's just the pipework. If you vent the expansion chamber at the same time you will get even more in.

Thanks for catching my error. Actually, the wife entered 2 fuel ups, one was a partial and she didn't know how to do it. The mileage was actually 549, not 449. Total MPG ended up being 37, not 30.
