More Fuelly graphics?

Sure, we can put something together. What did you have in mind?

Here's a version of the Fuelly logo with a white background:

And to embed this image somewhere, you could copy and paste the following HTML:

<a href="http://www.fuelly.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.fuelly.com/images/fuelly-logo-white.gif" width="119" height="85" alt="Fuelly" title="Share and compare MPG at Fuelly" border="0"/></a>

But if some other size or graphic would work better we could probably do something else too.

List of all entries

You can view all of the entries for your Blazer here:

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/ducky/blazer/log

To get there in the future, go to your blazer profile page:

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/ducky/blazer

And look for the link that says, "View All Fuel-ups" directly under the table that shows your last 10 fuel-ups.

Estimated Hwy MPG

We've talked about including a slider on the fuel-up page that lets you estimate what percentage of city vs. highway driving you think you had for the last tank. I do think it'd be fun to start accumulating that data, but I don't think it's going to be very accurate. Which means a city/highway slider (and any stats that come from that input) could end up being frustrating for people who want precision.

Forum banner code incorrect?

Thanks for letting us know about these problems. It sounds like BBcode and phpBB are just trying to keep up with problem scripts in their signature files.

I changed the sig stuff a bit so you might try it out now and see if it works. I added .png to the end of the image files, shortened the image file URLs, and cleaned up the HTML a bit so it's around 200 characters.

Estimated Hwy MPG

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what you're asking about here. I'm guessing you'd like Fuelly to calculate your highway vs. city mileage?

Maybe if we had a way for people to report what percentage of a tank was used for what type of driving we could show some sort of statistics about highway versus city, but I think even that would be fairly wild guessing by all parties.

Graph not updating?

The graph only plots fuel-ups where MPG is calculated. Since several of your fuel-ups are marked as partial, you've only had MPG calculated on two of your fuel-ups so far. Once you start adding a few filled tanks in a row, you'll get more entries on the graph.

US/Imperial mpg figures

We finally broke down and added imperial gallons to the display options. Here's more info: UK MPG Added.

Fuelly Badge on Facebook?

There's isn't a way to post the badge image specifically to Facebook, but you can import your fuel-ups. I explained how to do it in the last comment in this thread.

twitter integration?

Oh, this seems as good a place as any to mention that if you want to go the other direction and add your fuel-ups to twitter, I saw someone doing that the other day. They added their Fuelly fuel-up feed to TwitterFeed. Then it auto-posts every fuel-up to Twitter for them.
posted by pb November 13, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Yep, we've been planning this from the beginning but we've hit some hurdles along the way. Getting your Fuelly account associated with your Twitter account is a painful multi-step process, and we've been trying to come up with an easier way. And coming up with a good message format and how to handle errors (ignore the message if it's formatted wrong?, send a direct message back asking for a corrected version?, etc) is another issue we're thinking about.

This is in the works, we're just trying to find the most efficient and error-free way for it to happen.

Why no EPA Estimate for one of my cars?

I just fixed it up. There was a mismatch between our Lexus model names and the EPA data model names. The Fuelly model was "IS300" and the EPA model was "IS 300", so when the system went to try to match them up it couldn't find a match.

Anyway, should be working for you now.

How about retiring a car without deleting it?

You're right rem83, I forgot to flip the final switch. Sorry about that, it should be there now.
posted by pb November 12, 2008 at 7:38 AM
ok, just added retiring a vehicle to the site. You can also now select a Primary vehicle so one car or motorcycle will show up at the top of your lists across the site.

Retiring vehicles has been on our to-do list for a while now. We'll get that added soon.

Moped/Scooter as Generic Makes

Have you seen the Browse All Motorcycles page? Scooters and Mopeds are in there too, and you can browse by make. For example, you can see all Genuine Scooters. We don't want to move away from actual makes to something more generic and lose that ability to browse by manufacturer.

Display previous miles on entry page

You could bookmark your fuel log on your iPhone. Here's a link. Then bring that page up when you want to know your last odometer reading.

Gas price chart?

This is a frequent request, but we're probably not going to add a chart for gas prices for a few different reasons. Here's what Matt said last time this came up:

"We're hesitant to include price in too many metrics because it's not something you have tons of control over. We're trying to highlight the things you can change with behavior -- using a lighter foot will save you money and you'll get farther, but with the fluctuations in fuel prices, we don't want to highlight too many things based on price because the price is almost completely out of driver's control."

Browsing by MPG?

So you'd like to see a list of, say, all cars that get over 30mpg or all Hondas that get over 30mpg?

We don't have a way to do that right now, and setting that up is complicated by the fact that even the same model of car can get wildly different average mileage. But maybe it's something that calculating the average of averages for a particular model could smooth out. It's an interesting idea, I'm just not quite sure what it would look like offhand.

Suggestion: split up different engines

We do offer some limited filtering by engine type and body style. And there is a separate model page for the Jetta TDI.

Technical Beef with the Line Graph

That's a good idea, dirtydiesel. In my perfect world I'd like to see graphs like those you find at Google Finance. (Here's The Dow graph.) You can interact with the data, select different time periods, and link to specific news stories (or fuel-ups in our case) that affect the data. Unfortunately, we're not Google and our graphing abilities are limited. But I agree that we could add some more graphs to show individual fuel-ups in the past, we just need to find a good way to present that data. A graph at the current size would get cramped very quickly with 20+ fuel-ups.

And it's not completely related, but Google does offer a Chart API. Moving all of our charts to their system might give us more room to expand in the future and that's something we're looking at.

Expand the data stored

One of the ideas behind tagging fuel-ups is the ability to group those with common characteristics. For example, I tag all of my fuel-ups with the name of the gas station so I can view every fuel-up for my Prius at a shell vs. safeway. We have a lot more work to do in visualizing those differences, but you could do the same with any other metric including octane. And we'll continue to work on teasing out those differences.

Metric RSS + US/Metric in Profile

I just set up a metric RSS feed. If you have Metric selected, you get links to the metric RSS feed now on vehicle profile pages. If you want to link to the metric feed directly, it's available at:

[car profile url]/log/metric-rss

When you switch to Metric, we set a cookie called showMetric that never expires. You should get the site in Metric as long as you use the same computer/browser combo from then on. If you are using the same computer and browser each time, you might check your security settings and make sure you're accepting long-term cookies from Fuelly.

Fuelly API

We've talked about adding an API, and it's something we'll probably do soon. But we need to work out a method for authenticating before posting fuel-ups via an API.

If you want to write a widget for your blog, we have RSS feeds of your most recent fuel-ups. Just go to your car profile page and look for the feed icon under the recent fuel-ups table.

Add Eagle Talon as an automobile make and model please!

The problem is that we didn't have Eagle as a car manufacturer so he couldn't enter Talon as a model. I just added Eagle, so you should be set to create your car, macker1316.

In the future, you can use our handy Request a Make form that's linked from the bottom of the new vehicle page.

Is mpg on bar graph average or best?

Oh ok, we cross-posted comments. Same issues apply for the CR-V page. Keep in mind that Fuelly relies on user-submitted data. So if someone enters bad data it will show up on the site. We have some checks in place for wildly inaccurate data, but as long as it falls within the realm of realistic, we report it on the site.

That's why it's better to focus on averages for any given vehicle instead of outliers. And you can always send an individual driver Fuelly Mail to ask them why their mileage is so good and/or wrong.
posted by pb October 24, 2008 at 9:38 AM
Yep, the bar graph shows average MPG from all the cars on the page. (I'm assuming you're talking about this page.) The highest MPG on the graph right now is 54, which belongs to this car, and yep it only has 1 fuel-up so that's probably not very accurate. MPG is rounded up for the graph, and matches are grouped together.
posted by pb October 24, 2008 at 9:34 AM

mpg calculations

Your last two fuel-ups were not calculated because you marked the first as a partial tank. Here's more information about partial fills: How do I account for partial fuel-ups?

Maintenance Records?

This is the idea behind vehicle notes. Click 'Add a note' from the menu to the left to try it out. I add oil changes via notes, and you can see how others are using notes here: Recent Activity showing New Notes. Just click their car name and scroll down to their recent fuel-ups to see how notes fit in with fuel-ups.
