Question Antifreeze disposal

Where do you dispose of used antifreeze in an environmentally friendly way?

I have 24 gallons of flush from two vehicles* and I can't find information on proper disposal. It's not officially classified as hazardous waste but I sure can't dump it on the ground. I have a septic system so I can't dilute it down the drain and let the treatment plant take care of it (which is officially ok in some places).

*: One never came out clean and I gave up after 12, the other one came out clean just as I was about to give up. One is old fashioned green/yellow stuff, the other is red Dexcool.

Re: Antifreeze disposal

Doesn't yer Transfer Station have any information about recycling antifreeze?

Re: Antifreeze disposal

I checked the transfer station site...they're pretty good but they don't list antifreeze. I saw the ecarcenter site but it didn't help.

That last link is a good find. Looks like I can make an appointment and get rid of it at the state's central landfill's recycling facility. I came across similar info elsewhere but it was less clear.

Re: Antifreeze disposal

Ah. One of the pages I saw before actually has an online form with the available days listed.
http://www.rirrc.org/content/index.p...azardous-waste

Edit: That URL doesn't work. Can't go straight there, have to go to http://www.rirrc.org/ then click "Resident" then "Household hazardous waste".

Re: Antifreeze disposal

When I lived in Huntinton Beach, California, they told us to flush it down the toilet. I know 1 tablespoon will kill a large dog from kidkey failure. It is quite dangerous, they test for it in forensics. If it gets into a storm drain, it will kill fish. It is made from a petroleum product and is like drinking gasoline, poison.
I believe basic dish soap will break it up like oil floating on water.

Re: Antifreeze disposal

Places that let you pour it down the drain have sewage treatment plants that properly break it down. I have a septic system.

Anyway, I got an appointment for Eco-Depot as linked in my previous post and went. They never asked me for my form or appointment. I showed up, never got out of my truck, pulled up and they unloaded it for me and sent me on my way anonymously without even asking what it was they were unloading.

Re: Antifreeze disposal

maybe a little late but one of the advance autoparts places near me started taking it (like they do the oil). I don't think they all do but it may be worth asking. it wasn't near the setup that they had the oil. it was a grate sat overtop of a 55 gallon drum. still, I am done with it.

I thought I was bad off with 9 gallons from a recent flush.

Re: Antifreeze disposal

9 gallons would almost have worked for my truck:

(the 11th gallon was clean)

...but the Buick definitely needed more, I gave up when it was still coming out murky:
