Here's one of my post from the h-t list from early september '07:

Oh man I pass smog today!
Prev tests:

MPH HC CO NO
15 9 .02 1826
25 8 .02 1635

Today's test

MPH HC CO NO
15 38 .09 185
25 19 .05 178

I cut my NO by 10 folds!!!

So, how did I do it?
Of order of importance, I think:

1. timing from 16 to 13 deg
2. clean EGR passageway by replacing intake with a known good one (I would put that as #1 but my intake was not completely clogged when I tested it)
3. cleaned carbon from intake ports on the engine and new intake (esp near the injectors)
4. new plugs - one step colder gapped at .041-.043; original one was probably 5 years old and had a gap of .60-.70 when taken out
5. New air filter (probably did nothing - I should have kept the old one in since old dirty filter will increase HC (which is what I want).
6. Cleaned EAVC (screen plugged) - not sure if this can affect NO

I went in early before temps hit 100 deg. Last time I warmed up the car for 30 minutes driving it on the highway. Not this time. I drove it to the test only station 5 mins away turned it off and waited. Engine cold when the guy arrived. This should be #3.5.

My goal was to richen up the mixture somehow. I think retarding the timing helped, but not sure how it affects gas mileage. Since it's a commuter, I will probably advance it back to stock or higher.

Anyways, this smog saga has come to a close for me. I spend so much time on it that I was getting frustrated and was wondering if it was worth it. Since I commute about 120 miles/day, I can say it was worth it.

Actually that's pretty darn good for a Regal. My parents had a '79 regal. That thing was such a polluter and gas guzzler.

I'm impressed with your HC #'s. My VX gets consistent 8-9PPM HC for the
last four years. I fattened it up to pass NOx emission (by 4 folds).

Three6Eight -

EDIT : It's interesting that you have a LOWER max values allowed than my car, even though my car has two fewer cylinders and is one year younger.

Here's mine from another thread :

My car passed with even better numbers for HC and CO pollution (below the average !), but the NO went up. I did have the HAI online after the first test and for this test, so maybe this is an effect of the (mild) lean-burn. I didn't have the ScanGauge online, but I would guess at least 130+ degrees F HAI.

To settle in the ECU/PCM, I did gentle driving but nothing that would risk throwing a code like EOC.

Im guessing 280-299 (I dont wanna say 300 cause I dont want to overrate my car )

Havent taken it to the track yet but I have a scangauge interceptor and according to that my car runs 14.2 @100 MPG in the quarter. Dont know how accurate that is but I should take my car to the track soon.

It still gets 33 MPG on road trips if I set the cruise control at 65 so thats nice. I'm gunning for the 12's in the quarter so when tax return season comes Im buying an intercooler. Im a GM fan and all but it annoys me how their FI cars didnt come with IC's back in the day. My truck didnt come with an IC either

I noticed your car list too when I first signed up here, Gotta post picks of that Typhoon dude, thats one of my dreamcars Did that come with an IC stock?

I'll throw some pictures up of the Ty by end of the week....
Yeah, the truck came with an air to water intercooler that sits right on top
of the engine. I rather go with an air to air one.

SVOboy -- richening up things definately reduces NOx.

It looks like I can get over 40 MPG now, but we'll see when (my mild SoCal) winter hits. As you can see, other GasSavers are getting 50 and over in their Saturns.

From what I have read, lean burn lowers HC and CO but increases NO, which jibes with the results of my smog test.

In the last year I have run the Red Line Fuel System Cleaner. During my smog test I was using the FFT (http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=15). I make NO claims it increased my MPG, but who knows, maybe FFT helped my smog test.
