I hit 40 mpg =), what do you guys consider special?

44.85 to be exact

Cool stuff, if fuel economy was the quarter mile I feel like I just hit 13's in the quarter mile and if I hit 50 mpg that would be like hitting 12's in the quarter

That being said I know most of you guys aren't into horsepower, obviously since this is a Fuel economy board.

I know cars are different and of course a F150 wont have the same FE as a festiva but what do you guys consider really special?

Do you guys go by how many % over the EPA rating a particular car is in gas log entries or do you just go by the numbers?

Anyway the FE game is really winning me over and I look forward to seeing 50 MPG

Rock on everyone this site has been really fun

I think most here look at high mpg first...% over EPA second. The majority of members that have been here a long time seem to really push for the high mpg vehicles, which is obvious, and do not care for most larger vehicles in general...some are even "haters" LOL!

Myself, I respect the ones who have gone full tilt with the smaller efficient cars and taken them to the next level. I also appreciate ANYONE who comes here are tries to increase thier mileage with better driving techniques and mechanical improvements. I know some that have reservations about motorcylces/scooters, but it was the easiest way for me to increase MY overall efficiency without selling my Jeep. I need and enjoy my Jeep and was not willing to just get rid of it. The money spent on the scooter was well worth it IMO.

Here's how I see it. Almost any old car that isn't an all-out land yacht can get 30s on the freeway. But 40s are not so easy to come by. ANYTHING over 40MPG is good in my eyes.

I'm shooting for 40mpg with my Escort when it is back together, then 50mpg with additional tricks and aero refinements.

Then I'm shooting for 30mpg with my minivan with aero and tweaks before I rebuild the spare motor, then 40mpg after, possible potential of 50mpg highway with displacement on demand.

Then I'll start messing with HHO cells and try and push the escort to 65-70 and the van to 60. Then there's still thermal efficiency gains to be won, done properly it could double up everything else, but one is stuck with compromising around what is there.

Then if that's not enough for me I'll convert them both to standards and start EOCing....

But mostly these plans are aimed at arranging things such that they can get high mpg when daily driven by my wife and remain a practical vehicle.

Maybe if I get bored with them when they're in the 50+ range I'll buy a 91-96 Escort* 5 speed hatch and do a no compromise 100mpg+ project car. (Because they're lots cheaper than hondas, fairly aerodynamic and I know what I'm doing with them) Or if I feel like a real challenge, a 91-95 Caravan/Voyager with alllll the tricks in the motor and plug-in hybrid (Semi-through the road) that does 100mpg.

Road Warrior, the people I know with Escorts are all getting 36 to 40 mpg on the highway. Why is yours not getting that? One of my employees has a newer Focus wagon with an automatic and he is getting 36 mpg running just under 70 mph on longer trips.
He had an Escort before the Focus and it was getting close to 38-39 mpg on the highway running close to 70 mph.

It's an auto, I was getting into the mid 30s with it, with 30% city driving, it has done 38 on a rural highway run, headgasket probably had a leak all that while... So with compression increase and porting when I get it back together, may probably make the 40s easily.

40mpg was my goal in the civic and I did it with 0 mods just all driving technique. A lot of it helps cause it's 55mph and flat out in AZ. Aero mods would help my Saturn Ion Redline a lot on the freeway cause it's 75mph. And there is a big gap in the middle of the front bumper on the car.

While I see 40+ on flat roads where not stopping at lights on my ScanGauge, to actually average that on a tank seems next to impossible with my car; yet I still try.Next car will be smaller, but driving like this it may take a while to wear this one out.

40 MPG is my goal. I've hit 39 twice. One was during a trip to Sacramento and due to traffic I found myself using P&G without knowing what it was until I read up on hypermiling.

Looking through your fuel log 40 MPG is an accomplishment.

My mpg went up drastically when I changed my plug wires.

Then from there I did maintanence stuff day by day. I still need to change the fuel filter and pcv valve. I hope there a decent spike from that too.

How have you maintained your car? I know one of the biggest jumps in MPG is cleaning the maf sensor by spraying it with maf sensor cleaner spray.
