Yeah for many years I tested my synthetic oil far beyond recommendations and it took more than a few years but I did recently blow an engine. So the stuff isn't 100% guaranteed and so long the oil folks are not forking over the cash to pay for the engine I'll stick to the recommended intervals tyvm and lol

I would have to say, IF by mistake you happen to let the oil run low or if per pure chance it so happens that it does not get changed when it should then the synth will likely carry you through where the dino might not, but I wouldn't chance it past a for real mistake.

So I'll continue running synth because it is that much better of an oil, but I'm not pushing my luck again. Because I got real lucky it was only a 10hp Briggs 2-cycler on a piece of equipment, but it still cost me $425 for a new one and that's replacing it myself.
And sure 425 isn't so bad, but somehow I didn't feel too keen on spending it, either.
Dang good thing thou because a car engine would have ran me 4-5-6-7 or 8 thousand!

an interesting article on oil change intervals

My favorite part:
Quote:
In the mid-80’s, Germany’s leading car magazine Auto, Motor und Sport ran a VW Golf with a 1.6 liter gasoline engine for 100,000 kilometers (62,000 miles) without changing the motor oil or filter. They then tore down the engine completely and examined every single moving part [microscopically] for signs of wear and tear. What little wear they could find was not engine life threatening and fit within normal operating parameters for the given mileage.
My roommate does an oil change every 3-4 YEARS, and has yet to have an oil related breakdown on any of her cars.

My 1962 Mercury Comet's manual recommends a 6,000 oil change interval. I do one every 3,000mi or twice a year, just because it gets driven so rarely.

On my Scion I'm going with a 5,000mi change interval, just to be on the safe side. I'll be interested to see what the oil looks like come next change (I'm only 3500mi into the first oil change since I bought it).

OK the xB got the 3700 mile break in on the factory oil and then drained over night and Synlube installed and I am now at 19321 miles. When I get to 39700 miles I change the filter . . . maybe a little sooner - yeah another 20,000 miles for the filter change and the lube stays in . . . note that I do NOT call it oil. It sure feels weird not changing the oil a few times a year.

Mobile-1 every 3000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first!! (Change it
yourself - it's cheaper, and it'll get done right!).

It's as if some of you are proud to throw away clean oil

+1

I'm with you. Our old school Ford doesn't require oil changes at 3k. It's a Focus. My big E350 gets used hard, and I usually don't make changes until 5k.

My current oil that came with my used car is now at 3,000 miles / 3 months and this conventional oil still looks good! But I'll change it at 4,000 miles / 1 more month because I want to put Synthetic in it! Would like to see what Hyperlube + Royal Purple + Castrol Syntec will do!
