95 Civic LX auto gas mileage...

Hey all, is there any possible way to improve the gas of a automatic Civic lx's mileage by 5 mpg or so? performance isn't too important really. i just would like to get close to the VX's 50+ mpg... would trading out the final driving gear be about the only way? please help... thanks

If you're capable of rebuilding an automatic transmission then sure, you could have someone fabricate a "taller" gear but usually people stick with M/T and then do that because Manual transmissions are far simpler. What kind of mileage are you currently getting? Also how long have you been reading on this site? There is a stupid amount of information on this site that will answer the majority of your questions without even asking them. You also should check out ecomodder.com as those people are far more hardcore about saving fuel.

Some things to think about:
Make sure your car is optimally tuned
remove excess weight
Some Aerodynamic mods (this is covered on various sites ad-nauseum)
Switch to a manual transmission
AND OR get a Civic VX...

Make sure all the bands are adjusted, change the filter, freshen the fill and top off with Lucas Transmission fix, should shift harder and be worth about 5-10%

Without fuel, they were nothing..thundering machines sputtered & stopped..Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice
