Toyota Avalon Engine Off Coasting

How to Tow a Toyota Avalon Behind an RV | eHow

This article claims that Avalons older than 2008 can be flat towed if a transmission lube pump is installed.

For short periods, would I be able to engine off coast without damage, without installing the lube pump?

Based on past experience I would not bother with information found on ehow.com.

That said, sure, if you install the appropriate pump you can EOC almost any automatic. I haven't seen any serious technical discussions of short EOC runs with an automatic that is not equipped for that. I suspect that it would be fine but I really, really can't recommend it. If it's not fine, that's an awfully expensive repair.

I've done it with a Ranger, but it was only on the down hill of some steep slopes. The EOC was maybe 2 miles out of a 60 mile commute. There was no problems when I had it, or any for my father when he had it for 60k miles. IIRC, I did drop the pan and change filter at least once.

I've tried it with our Sable. It has a gate between D and N though. So, nearly all the engine off I've done with it is at stops.

Like THC, I don't recommend it. Unless, the cost of a new transmission or repair isn't a big deal.

I've been EOC for a while, both before my post and after, and I haven't noticed anything. Fluid looks clean, no burning. I do it at least twice in a 20 mile commute for a mile or two both times. I do try to rev match now. I think the most damage to transmission is actually shifting back into gear, though it does it fairly well.
