Ford 6.4 diesel economy.

So what kind of mileage can people get out of the new ford diesel?

The company I work for has an f350 dually and it only gets around 9.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

Sorry, mikemoss, your company got hosed just like me. I own a '04 6.0 liter Powerstroke regular cab SRW 4x4, and I do a lot better than 9mpg, close to 18 mpg overall. Not bad for a 6000 pound vehicle, but I expected to get well over 20.

I remember the good old days when guys with 5.9L Cummins / Dodges were getting 22- 25 mpg highway. Even Ford 7.3's got well over 20 regularly.

How much does your dually weigh? Truck makers have been building bigger and heavier each year for at least a decade. It's no secret that the key to great diesel mileage is to keep the engine size down and the truck weight down.

GM, Dodge and Ford all have access to smaller diesel engines. GM installs 5.2 liter (Isuzu) four cylinder in its medium duty trucks. Dodge could install a 4 cylinder vatiant of the Cummins, they made 3.9L 4 cylinder truck engines for years. And Ford / Navistar installs 4.5 liter V6s based on the 6.0L V8 in its medium duty trucks. It's frustrating to see FE engines in Class 4 - 5 trucks but unavailable to pickup buyers.

I'd love a truck that gets better mileage, but my wallet is staying in my pocket until somebody makes a truck that gets 25 mpg highway again.

Not 100 percent sure. My boss told me that they weighed it with the trailer with about half of the tools we usually have in it and it weighed right at 11k.

The owner drove it to the quarry where I worked last year and the trip computer said that it was only getting 9.6 mpg. I think that the 4.56 gears attribute to that.

We also have a truck with a 6.0 powerstroke and my boss used to be a ford mastertech at a dealership and had the thing tuned funny and it got like 26 but he said it was a dog. I need to ask him what exactly he changed to achieve that.

We have a 2009 F-250 (6.4) shop truck (crew cab, long bed, 2wd) that gets 15-20mpg @70mph according to the fuel computer. I realize that this is 2WD and non-dually so I know that contributes to higher mileage but Im also fairly certain it has rear gears between 4.11-4.73 as well.

Hmmm I'm eyeballing a cheap '90 F-250HD with the 7.3... that would get over 20?

Those any problem for UEO, UVO etc?

Without fuel, they were nothing..thundering machines sputtered & stopped..Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice
