Average selling price isn't the margin.

I know initially, the SUVs had little or no R&D because they were all based on very old pickup platforms, they had little or no emissions or safety regulations on them, and the gas guzzler tax didn't apply. Further, we decided to five away tax incentives to buy the biggest ones (8,000# or so) if you could call them 'busines' vehicles.

There may be others but how much is still true?

Silveredwings -

Ha ha, I thought that Americans weren't willing to "go slow" in terms of driving slow.

I must be tired.

I think most americans think "hurry up and produce a bunch of 40 mpg cars so that the gas for my Expedition will be cheaper".

With luck, this will be enough of a counter-argument in the debate, that congress won't blindly follow this (industry paid for) madness of pursuing short-term gains at the expense of long term viability for the country.
Just put the letters to my 2 senators in the mail today. Hopefully they will arrive (and be read) before the upcoming vote(s) on the CAFE (fuel economy) standards.

Again, if any other gassavers members want to do this, now is the time, because this appears to be up for a vote "soon". Even a fax (or worse yet, and email) is better than nothing. Now is the time to let your elected officials know that you actually SUPPORT more realistic CAFE standards, because the auto-industry is lobbying hard to get these new FE standards watered down (so they can continue to sell profitable gas-guzzlers, the future of out country be damned)...
