This is slightly off topic but a few years ago I saw a concept vehicle that was being developed to replace the Hummer. It was powered by 4 electric motors, one for each wheel, with a diesel generator. For the life of me I can't remember where I read the article. The neatest part was the stealth capability, turn off the generator and run just off the batteries when you needed to be really quiet.

I hope the Volt takes off and they turn out a small SUV since I really need 4wd.

Ah, a somewhat content-free review/article about the Volt...

that's an awesome car...I think a generator is a must for all electric cars though...hard to get stranded with no power outlets around.

GM opened the battery plant and their remodeled assembly line in Michigan recently.

Too bad electric cars have such a problem running in cold weather, something Michigan has plenty of.

Wait until you see your electric bill after a month of driving and charging . . . it will not be that energy efficient.

Still cheaper than using gasoline, and if you put up some solar panels or a wind turbine, it'd be cheaper yet. Assuming you are not violating some zoning reg or HOA bylaw...
