Well, it cost me like $20 to join CARFAX for 30 days. I was using it to research cars as I was in the market for a new one. Since I found this place with such great info, I figured you guys might like to take advantage of a week or two of free CARFAX

I got a CARFAX report on my 2002 Saturn SL2 after I had bought it. Something about a "minor damage to front end" due to hitting a "guardrail". I've checked the front end top to bottom and didn't see any evidence of a repair or slipshod repair.

I've been very dilligent on timely oil changes. In fact, in the 14k miles I've driven it myself to 58k, I've put new tires on it, 4 oil changes (due for a 5th in another 2k). Also had the manual transmission fluid and engine coolant changed. I hope the previous owner changed the oil at least every 5k-6k miles over the first 4 years of it's life.

Just yesterday morning was getting my stuff out of the back seat for work and found a barrett (sp?) hairpin? Something tells me the previous owner was not a dude.

Well, I'm a dude, and you'll find lots of barrett's, hair ties, scrunchies etc. in my trunk. I have 3 daughters

As to checking it out, look for the VIN on the front fascia and both fenders and the hood. If a VIN is missing (should be on a white sticker) the part has been replaced/repaired. My 2002 SL1 shows nothing on the CARFAX, yet the left front fender has no VIN and has been painted.

An accident will only show on the CARFAX if it was reported to the DMV or police. For instance my 2005 Civic Si shows no accidents on CARFAX, but it was hit in a parking lot and had the LF fender and fascia replaced.

You're right. The car could have been owned by a family who's outgrown the vehicle. Maybe they've traded up to a Saturn VUE.

I'll see if I can find the VIN on the bumper (underside, out of plain site?) Stands to reason that the VIN would be etched on body panels. I believe 1995 and older Saturns were a favorite among car thieves. With the introduction of factory optioned keyless entry and engine immobilization, thefts of 1996 and newer S-series for chop shops don't happen as often.
