2000 Chevy Metro or 1997 Honda Civic

ok...

want to know what the members would do in my position: got a guy w/ a 2000 chevy metro w/ AT and 132k miles down to $1300. i haven't seen the car as of yet however.

should i buy this or keep my 97 civic w/ 5 speed? i can't afford to insure another vehicle, so the civic would have to go(or get parked). it (my civic)has a beat up exterior, but perfect interior, drivetrain, and a/c w/ new michelin tires. so, i'd like to get MORE than my $1300 investment back if i sold it.

i like the 5 speed, but my wife and i agree our 16 year old daughter should learn w/ an automatic. here's the car...http://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/2702375570.html

Buy the Metro, park the Civic. Hope your daughter enjoys learning on the Metro, gets used to driving an efficient car, and wants it as a "cute" first car...then give it to her.

There's no need for a given beater to be unappreciated or create a sense of entitlement; my dad gave both my sister and I beaters, we appreciated them and were able to save to buy our own nicer cars. It worked out well for everyone, we didn't beat up Dad's daily driver learning (and leave our music cranked and the seat back when he got in)...we did that stuff to the beater. It was cost-effective for us without spoiling us.

...just my opinions and experiences.

with ya HC. that's my experience as well. i had to get a job FIRST, then my dad let me use his truck making me pay for the gas and insurance, as well as $100/ month payment.

she will have to work as well, but i would not charge her a payment.

Does the Metro get better MPG than your 97 Civic?

I thought A/T meant automatic transmission?

Yup, I had a job first too, and I paid for my own gas and insurance but the car was given to me (no lump sum, no monthly payment). I didn't even get added on to my parents insurance, where I would pay the difference; I had to get my own separate insurance with 250/500 coverage to meet the requirements of their homeowners policy...I could have bought a brand new car with that money.

Re: 2000 Chevy Metro or 1997 Honda Civic

id keep the civic, its very well to know how to drive manual trans, i have several woman friends who drive manual cars every day.

hell my dad drove me in my 95 s10 with a 5 speed out to the boonies pulled off the road said get in and learn haha. now i hate automagics...

no offense but most teens wreck thier first car or damage it on some way or put it in a ditch, might as well do it with an already banged up car...
