Have auto fatalities gone down as a result of stricter safety laws in the USA?

Just curious if anyone can help me find some data. I'm wondering if the increasingly stricter safety laws in automobiles have resulted in fewer fatalities.

I also recently saw an article about side air bags that claimed (statistically) they significantly cut fatalities in side impacts. Of course, now I can't find it.

space ships are not that safe - apollo 13 hello! Seems that air bags didn't save as many lives as seat belts did according to the news when they talked about stability control being required.

Hi JanGeo -?space ships are not that safe - apollo 13 hello!?

Really ?
1 dozen people have walked on the moon.
Each persoan has traveled the almost half million mile journey there and back safely , not counting the ones that just orbited and returned., and not counting the millions of miles the shuttle has run with only a few losses of life.

By comparison , distance versus fatalities, space is safe., cars are not.
