Re: Looking at a used truck tonight

My adjusters are not seized but they are incredibly difficult to turn. If they're simple to disassemble and reassemble I should do that, wirebrush, lube, etc.

Drat, I've hijacked this thread. Sorry, Fetch!

Re: Looking at a used truck tonight

yea the brake pad self adjusters should be VERY easy to turn, take em off and spray and scrub them with brass or nylon brush. i like to very lightly lube them with high temp wheel bearing grease (wont melt and drip on drum when brakes get hot) when i put em back together.

My problem is the parking brake adjuster... its 2 cables from each wheel going to a central bracket thing that attaches to a single cable to the floor pedal. the adjuster is that bracket thing and cant get that damn nut to turn worth a crap haha.

Yeah, the bolt gets horribly rusty. I won't have that issue because the intermediate cable snapped a few weeks ago and I replaced it; it came with a new equalizer bracket and hardware.

Yeah, they're easy to disassemble. It just unscrews. Make sure you keep them separate, as they are different for the right and left side of the car (one has reverse threads) When positioned in the car, turning the adjuster wheel towards the outside of the vehicle should extend the adjuster.

I'm glad I decided to take them apart to clean them up...turns out one is broken.

Do you have to prevent the tappet from spinning in order for the adjuster to work?

Re: Looking at a used truck tonight

The body of the adjuster should remain stationary. The only part that should move (when installed) is the screw & the toothed wheel. Each time you firmly press the brake when backing up the foot on the large lever should engage the toothed wheel and and turn it about 1/4 turn down, extending the screw. This keeps the brakes in adjustment.

Hey man, whatever it takes to keep it going. Usually my threads die after 1 or 2 posts. I'm just glad to spark a discussion.

Re: Looking at a used truck tonight

I bought a kit for $20 with all the guts for both sides.

My adjusters don't have a body. Don't forget I have rear discs. The body is built into a much larger stationary piece of heavy iron. All I have are the star wheel and the "tappets" (term from GM service manual) that actually push the shoe. The tappets are free to turn with the star wheel but now that I have the kit I see how it works; I need to prevent that. I could actually just turn the tappets and keep the star wheel stationary.
