the hard thing about that is that we recently adopted our daughter. she is 3 months old right now and a hand full to say the least.

my concern is that it will be too much on us right now to train a dog and raise an up and coming toddler (she may be considered a toddler now, I don't know)

That sounds tough on the heartstrings. One reason I'm a cat person is their relative longevity (especially if indoor). Tortoises aren't cuddly enough or I'd probably go with one of them.
