Refurbing rechargable battery packs

Has anyone ever taken a dead pack from cordless tools or laptops apart to replace the bad cells? I've heard of it being done, and might give it a try with the old battery to the netbook. Just checking for advice.

Thanks

I've never done it, but when I worked construction we would send rechargable battery packs for lazer levels and EDM theodolites out to have the battery packs rebuilt rather than buying new ones.
