I get chased down now in my CRX with people trying to buy it. Any time I stop at a rest area, or a grocery store, or wherever, people's heads nearly explode, as the previous commentor wrote, when I tell them I get 42 highway in an automatic.

I do drop mine down into 2nd and 3rd also (4-speed auto) to climb hills, and take corners even in town AT the speed limit, when everyone else is nosediving due to braking. I just love it!

I hope the Fiesta/Festiva/whatever makes a comeback and they make it entirely from aluminum.

Making it out of aluminum for some reason just made me think that we're thinking the wrong way about crumble zones and crash resistance. We should make it out of a super strong alloy skeleton with break away wheels so when it gets hit hard enough it just absorbs all the energy and goes flying away like a billiard ball.

Hmm, that sounds more like a fun Japanese game show.

all good till that "billiard ball" flies into more oncomming traffic/crowded street/into a store/restaurant

would be fun to see...

The reason we have crumple zones is so the vehicle absorbs the energy of the impact, not your body. We have the technology to build a car that will sustain no damage in a 40 MPH collision, but chances are the passengers will not survive, or if they do they will be pretty bad off. I think its pretty good that with today's technology we often see people crawl out of a car that was in a high speed collision with relatively minor injuries.

I used to drive an ambulance in my hometown. I remember it was the biggest deal when we ran our first auto accident with airbag deployment. It was one of our member's mothers in her Dodge Omni hatchback. Its a good thing she came out of it alright because most of the emergency personnel on the scene were marveling at the airbag, and how she came out of that car with no injury. Yeah, we can go back to strong cars with no crumple zones like the 50's, but back then it was common for even low speed crashes to be fatal.
