Re: New to motorcycles

Wow. That is a good deal.

I wonder how dangerous south Philadelphia would be this time of year?

I went to look at this Ninja 250 in person today, seller is a girl, seemed honest enough, bike had been down, front plastic has crack/chips, mising a few bolts and a passenger peg, so one of the exhaust is dangling.. $1k is a pretty fair price considering the mileage.

I tried bump starting the lil Ninja, but didn't get it to idles. Battery is in need of replacement.

If I'd gotten it to run/idle, I would have left a deposit with the seller.
But since neither one of us could get it to run/idle, I offered $750, the seller had a few potential buyers, so she said she would call me if other do not show.

Overall looks a decent bike for the price, no need for tires, chain/sprockets/brake pads, etc.. I could have gotten it to run if I tried harder, but I didn't want to pay seller the full asking price.

South Philly isn't that bad, I'm 5'10", 130 lb. no worry of getting mugged.

Re: New to motorcycles

long story short, if you're going to ride, you have to want to ride or you'll just get scared/hurt.

Just a tip, take the MSF course before buying anything. My fiancee wanted to ride with me but was a little wishy-washy about it. she took the MSF course and realized she didn't want to ride as much as she thought (she's sort of a timid driver to start with...bad for a bike, there's no room for uncertainty)

+1 for expect an accident. mine was, luckily, 50 feet from my parking spot at 10 mph (someone else backed out of a spot without looking right in front of me), I've also been in a dozen near accidents because people in Carbondale cannot drive for sh**! It doesn't matter if you're in black leather or bright orange. you might as well be in camo in the woods; people still won't see you. Just wear your gear. always.

That being said, you can't beat the economy, power, and FUN combination. My VX is an 800 and more of a torque machine than high HP but will keep up with 300 hp cars while getting 35 mpg in town and 50 mpg at 75 mph (compare to the firebird that gets 15 in town and mid 20s on the highway)

Re: New to motorcycles

You need one of those sumo suits for totally safe riding.

Re: New to motorcycles

you are going to work in the dark. I HATE riding in the dark. depending upon where you live, it may be cold in the morning. I HATE riding in the cold. you can find a small car that will give you decent mpg, has a heater, better lighting, and much more protection from the elements, deer ect. what about when it rains? I HATE riding in the rain, or snow. I love to ride, but using a motorcycle for commuting has its drawbacks.

Re: New to motorcycles

It surely does. Yesterday I just couldn't go home because snow fell and covered the trails on our hill. I forced Teresa up there in the snow once, and I don't really want to do it again, unless she stays there until it melts. And I still have a working weekend ahead.
I think a quad would be the best to get home, but that wouldn't be all-purpose enough, so one day I'll get a simple, small car and leave it down at the road (the entrance of the game reserve nearby looks fine to me) if I can't get up there. Not now, we have modifications/maintenance to do on the house before that. And we don't intend to use any kind of loans.
