Rz350

The Ninja 250 thread eveolved into a discussion of the Yamaha RZ 350. This bike was a two stroke, which died due to emissions regs. Two strokes were incredible fast, but had huge HC emissions and sucked gasoline like pigs.

Evinrude (a division of Bombarier Recreational Products) makes direct injection two stroke outboards. Direct injection massively increases fuel economy in two stroke outboards with low HC and CO emissions.

Yamaha would do well to license the technology from BRP and bring back the RZ350.

OOOOO how they polluted. Smoked, loud just down right unrulely little monsters. But never failed on the fun-o-meter.

Sorry about the Ninja 250 thread. Those little 250's use to pester me like flys at a picnic.

I remember looking at my RZ when I picked it up uttering those CAT pipes have to go NOW. A two stroke with cat's built into the pipes. Most pluged within months.

I miss the bike alot.

Sorry, it was me who has the RZ350. That would be so cool if Yamaha could put 2-strokes back on the streets! I don't think its going to happen. the EPA hates them, and they're doomed for motorcycles even off road these days. Dirt bikes are slowly migrating to 4-stroke technology. I go see dirt bike races once in a while, and last time, there were only a few left in the 250cc class.

Well, they're right to be hated...

Meh, depends on design. There are small EPA approved, even CARB approved iirc, two stroke DI engines. Course, I'm not sure why an EOC'er would talk crap about engines with high HC emissions.

Repent, for you hath sinned in the past.

Course, I have a feeling there may be some disadvantages to even coasting in N w/o load depending on the situation. But as long as there's a post cat oxygen sensor I think the ECU can catch it and light it off. YMMV.

edit- I should add that if you consider engine off in gear to be coasting the same should apply iirc.

In the grand scheme of things, two stroke motorcycles contributed very little to polution. It's a shame that one of the most efficent engine designs, however primitive some think it is, had to die. Gas thristy they were, I had more then a half dozen Kawasaki two stroke triples, a 1968,69,70, and two 71 H1's and and 3 1972 H2 750's. All of them had terrible fuel mileage, around 18-20 mpg. After 1972 I lost interest because they started detuning them. I loved destroying bikes that were 2 or 3 times the displacement of the H1's.
If Yamaha or Suzuki brought out another 350-500 Liquid cooled 2 stroke, I'd buy one in a heartbeat!!!

Indeed, I really only costed engine off for a few months, it's too annoying...

SonnyD, you're wrong about them contributing very little. Perhaps in places were their use is very low they might contribute less, but in India, for example, 2-stroke emissions are blamed for 40k air quality related deaths a year. That doesn't seem like very little to me. They are indeed poisonous to the air and environment, and I'm glad the EPA is taking a stand on their use.

OOOO they polluted like crazy. Esp. any of my two strokes. In certain states of tune, mostly big end tune. At lower rpms they would be loading up the pipes and when I would make them clear there throats out. They would belch all sorts of fuel out the stingers.

One night I got called out and raced a yzf-400 I think it was. Many consider them one of the best handling bikes ever built. And in OEM trim it would out handle a RZ. But mine wasn't stock. A billet frame and swing arm a long with wheels and tires of racing width and size,,, it didn't stand a chance. Those Yok. Sprints where evil sticky tires.

Anyway the cops got involved and I took off. They never caught me. But my bike was tuned for top end speed. So when at speed it would shoot blue flames 3' out of the pipes. I roasted my blinkers and rear cowling that night. I had the pipes kicked in just a little to much for that last degree of lean angle.

Sonny

I have a old friend of mine that is a Kaw 750 trip fan. He has 7 or 8 of them. From box stock, one in the crate still. To full on cruise night bike to bad azz drag bikes. His hot bikes are built to the most wild RC Engineering specs and then some. When he goes to the track he ruins a lot peoples night. Its really very funny to see him fire it up and folks just start leaving cause they know they cant beat him. So whats the point....

For me it looks like I will never own another two stroke bike. And maybe its better that way. Ive lived thru crap I shouldn't have on bikes that shouldn't have been. But where and Im thankful.

It looks like my next bike will be a Yamaha V-twin. I was really wanting a Warrior. But I just cant seem to get comphy with the forward controls. Its whole clam shell riding position makes my back hurt in very short order. I love everything else about the bike. But if you cant ride it with out taking pain pills. I cant own it. So it looks like a Strataliner is in my future. Its time for me to slow down and enjoy scooting. And the wife is looking forward to kicking back insted of hanging on for dear life. She is without a doubt the best passenger Ive ever had on a bike. And has never *****ed once about speed or the front of rear wheel being off the ground. Shes been a real sport. Im looking forward to a slower ride with her.
