BMW 1-Series Mild Hybrid

I am very interested in mild hybrids that perform regenerative braking such as the BMW 1-Series. I was curious if anyone knew if they use their beefed up starter motor as the generator when in regenerative mode. It makes sense, but the exact information eludes me. Be neat to see that tech in a small car with a modest engine. Potentially good bang for the buck.
