Comparing mileage of plug-in hybrids

I find that comparing plug-in hybrid vehicles is almost meaningless. The mileage is highly dependent on the type of trips (to some extent explained by the City/Highway ratio, though only available on the level of the individual car) but also by the availability of charging and willingness to actually charge (which, frankly, is optional with this vehicle type and some people don't bother).

When combined with the current inability to consistently distinguish between plug-in and non-plug-in hybrids (see my other post "Engine type consolidation") the mileages vary wildly.

Even if the plug-in vs non-plug-in filtering is fixed, I don't claim to have a solution for comparing the plug-in hybrids mileages. Perhaps asking the users for number of charges or kWh's charges at the time of the fuel-up?

As discussed elsewhere on this site, Fuelly is useless for PHEV.

It isn't just PHEVs, Fuelly isn't set up to handle bi, or dual, fuel vehicles. Which were quite rare until PHEVs showed up, so it was understandable to not consider when the site was developed.

It makes sense but is sad that fuelly seems to have stopped developing. Is there an alternative to fuelly that better supports plug-in vehicles?

It's a tiny company, and they need to focus on the apps that pay the bills.

There was a site that just tracked the data for the Volt. I'm unaware of any for PHEVs in general. A difficulty for tracking the fuel use of a PHEV is in tracking the electricity used. While some EVSEs(chargers) will track it, others, including the one shipped with the car, don't.

Plus those without smart meters will find it difficult to work out their cost to charge without analysing and breaking down their monthly electricity bills, which most people won't have time to do anyway.
