New to Fuelly! 1997 MB Diesel

Hi! Bought a 1997 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel in August. Just signed up for Fuelly (I've seen it promoted by members on some MB forums) and logged my last two fill-ups. Looking forward to saving fuel with the community. This is my primary vehicle for my 70 miles/day commute. I also have a 2006 Wangler Rubicon, which gets about 14mpg, which is now retired from the daily commute with the exception of bad winter weather.

That will be an interesting vehicle to follow. When you get a chance get your mpg icons into your signature. Welcome to the asylum.

Hi and welcome. How do you get a 20 year old diesel to pass the strict emission testing that we keep hearing about over there?

Vehicles are tested against the standard that they were certified for.
Assuming the state requires emission testing in that county, and doesn't make diesels exempt from them.

The federal emission regulations that a vehicle needs to be certified too in order to be sold are tough.

Sometimes I feel the emission regs are flawed, the cleaner efficient modern diesels are taken off sale, whilst the most polluting old diesels, which don't have much emission control equipment, or DPFs, are allowed to carry on polluting. Similar case here, which I guess they're tackling.

Even here your emission tests are against the standards the car had to meet when it was new. Not the current standards. Same for petrol as well as diesel.

Here in the US, the regulations are controlled by the County - not the State or Nation. There are no emissions tests in my county. I believe that only Hamilton Co. Ohio (Cincinnati) and Cuyahoga Co. (Cleveland) have tests.

I'm sure I'll struggle with the EGR, the intake manifold flaps, and other vacuum and electrical things on this car. But with only 91,000 miles on it, no rust, and 12 years of dealership records, I just had to buy it.

I'll try to figure out the signature.
