1991 Plymouth Acclaim

I inherited a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim which at this time has about 65K miles and the car is in great shape. It's got a 3.0 liter 6 cyl and I'm getting around 42 MPG combined city and highway. First I changed my driving habits, then I installed a K&N air filter which has high efficiency and is permanent. I then installed, and I know allot of guys are going to say "wasted money", a Tornado which goes into your air intake hose and makes the air coming in swirl and I'm telling you, it works! I noticed around 6 mpg increase with the Tornado and the K&N. A mechanic friend of mine advanced the timing a little which also helped and then my muffler fell off which left me with just a resonator and the catalytic converter. My friend told me to leave it off for less back pressure which he said helps and it dosen't sound bad at all. The last thing I've done is installed a set of Bosch +4 platinum spark plugs and replaced the coil, wires and all other filters. I'm going to try for 52 mpg with some other things but nothing radical.

How do you know the tornado was giving you the FE increase when you also changed to the K&N and started driving with FE in mind?

Tornado is a waste of money and blocks your airflow - take it out.

I think he's a tornado salesman and wants a fool to ask: where can I buy a tornado?
You know, I think I saw an autoparts place selling them (Kragens I think).

I think if he thinks it's working for him and he is able to get that good a mileage out of that car, that's great for him.

p.s. the explanation about being parted with his money is great.

BS-O-Meter

I say we put the BS-O-Meter to work!

I vote 1-Star for the thread for flat-out BS-edness.

I'm not a Tornado salesman and I've calculated the gas mileage and it's about 42mpg with what I've done. The only reason that I bought a Tornado was because a guy at Murray's told me it worked for him and if I bought one and didn't like it I could return it. Maybe it's not doing anything but with the things I have done and the things my mechanic friend has done, and I've calculated it five times, I'm getting about 42mpg. I'm sorry but I also didn't mention in my previous post that my mechanic friend tuned the car and he is really good. He builds and tunes race cars for local guys and he tuned my car on a dyno so maybe that made some difference also. I don't know, I'm just grateful!

Congrats dennis.. Sorry about the tornado comment. It really wasn't directed towards you, but more towards the product. Congrats at 42mpg. That's what really matters on this board, no matter how you get it (tornado or not).
Hope to see you in the high 40's soon!

If 42 is what you're getting, then that does seem rather high.

Not we don't believe you, but the statements indicating the FE increase with the mods you listed have yet to add-up in Scientific testing.

If it's the 3.0L Mitsubishi V-6, then that's a tall number. My folks had a mini-van with the same engine: burned oil at 250K miles, but went forever.

Do you have pics of your vehicle, engine bay, and what kind of driving do you do???
