2016 Mazda 2 getting easy 40mpg city driving!

Hi guys,

My wife recently bought a new Mazda 2 automatic 1.5 litre petrol with istop.

With only a few hundred miles on the clock, I am getting 40mpg on our morning commute through the inner city suburbs into the city centre. I'm using mild hyper miling techniques while also weaving through traffic quite a bit, so there is room for lots of improvement. The subcompact size also makes it a breeze for manoeuvring in the heavy traffic.

Mazda Australia claims 38mpg for city driving so I'm pretty happy that the claim can be easily beaten without becoming a road obstacle. In comparison, my BMW 640i would struggle to meet the 20mpg city claimed fuel efficiency even when driven with all my hypermiling knowledge.

Can't wait to get it onto the highway where claimed mpg is 56mpg.

Takes regular unleaded as well.

Anyone else finding the new breed of sub-compact cars are delivering great numbers straight off the factory floor?

I think cars in general, are doing great these days.
Even though, I do admit. My car depends on how you drive it for real good mileage. Don't at all have to be extreme hypermilling either.
I'm not even off the ethanol yet. Getting it up there. Looking at high 30's for 60/40, city/hwy. It's only rated 38 hwy.

My 1.4 FIAT gets pretty terrible mileage. Of course I drive it like it's meant to be driven, so that may affect things a little...

Yea my Fiat Abarth only got 30-40 mpg, they are too fun to drive sensibly! If you want economy get the Multijet diesel 500, it gets brilliant mileage

Rapid City unusually has a number of stations selling 100% ethanol-free gasoline(E0), from 85 octane to 91 octane. Go to pure-gas.org to find listings, maps & details to the few E0 sources in S. Dakota. If you find yourself in Minnesota & Wisconsin, they have great numbers of E0 stations. Up to a few years ago, you could find E0 sensibly priced in some places, even compared to lowball E10, making its extra mpg worth using. But the EPA & the "ethanol in gasoline industry" discovered that E0 use & sources were increasing dramatically in the U.S. Now, E0 is priced dramatically higher than E10.

I have seen the E0 dramatically higher. Also some stations it's much more reasonable. Just bought E0, regular, 85 octane today. It was 14 cents a gallon more than what I was getting in E10. The brand is offering a credit card with 30 cents off a gallon for next couple months. Then 10 cent's a gallon for the rest of the year. Normally offers 5 cents a gallon off. It's also a 24 hour station right on my way to work.
From what I've experienced so far in one day with the E0. It appears to be very much worth it.

What octane? Elevation high or low? No ethanol, right?
