Almost 100 MPG!

Fiat's advanced engine technology never fails to impress!

Just noticed the "official" fuel consumption figures for the New Fiat Punto. On the extra urban cycle (known as highway in the US) the 1.3 diesel claims to get 97 miles per gallon!

The average figure is 80 MPG, which is still very impressive. Thought it might interest those in the US wanting small economical cars, as most of you know, Fiats are now being sold in the US and it's more or less certain Fiat will be either selling cars with such engines, or putting this kind of impressive engine technology in Chrysler's too.

Let's not forget though, "official" figures can often be optimistic, but the least this car will do is around 60 MPG.

If that's the twin-air engine, it's notorious for having wildly optimistic official figures compared to the real-world figures.

Also don't forget, those claims are in UK gallon ratings, not US. So they will appear to be even less over here, but still, noteworthy and will get great mileage vs many of the offerings.

> it's the 1.3 diesel

OK, cool, although the twinair has higher official figures, in the real world the 1.3 engine actually gives the best results :-)

It's a diesel... so it probably won't come to America. For one, the emissions are different (which should change shortly). Second, for some reason, American distributers don't seem to think American Consumers want diesels... Most vehicles are available outside the US in diesel variants, sadly the US misses out. Also I believe the diesel/gas price difference is more significant (in favor of diesel) in foreign countries.

vr4Legacy is fairly correct about the diesel prices in the US. When the gasoline prices are lower, diesel is normally more expensive. Though when they go up, the difference between the two becomes closer and sometimes diesel is cheaper.

My wife has a diesel van in the Philippines and purchased diesel because diesel is cheaper there than regular gasoline.

Over here in the UK, diesel is (slighly) more expensive than petrol. Both are (roughly) $ 8.50 / usgallon.

here in the U.S., many 500 owners are getting well ABOVE the posted EPA ratings. my Sport 6sp Auto, on my last fill-up, got 35.4 mpg.

of course it didn't come easily, but considering my driving was 40/60% (city/hwy), my actual results were well ABOVE the EPA rating of 27 city/34 hwy. just my normal driving, paying no attention to my mpgs, I'll get between 32-34.

so far it seems that the more miles I put on my 500 (currently just over 12K), the better the mpgs. I'm a VERY happy FIAT Owner!
