Should I start with the camry, which I currently drive, or the VX, which I will hopefully get on wednesday?

I would think it'd be easier to start with the VX, if you're getting it this week. We'll see what the commish says about that.

MetroMPG: that sounds good, although I think that the VX (and the metro) have a harder time surpassing the EPA estimates than less fe cars like my camry. I'll have to check on the status of that lean burn in a hurry!

I agree about the Metro & VX, James.

But the contest is to see how much you improve over your own baseline. In effect we can ignore % over EPA for the purposes of the contest. The goal is to see if we can continue improving month over month (or week over week).

Ok I get it. I read through some of the rules and then got more confused. Thanks for stating it simply. The first fillup for me will be before I have really learned how to hypermile it, and before i have gone thru all the maintainence items, and that will be a good baseline.

Questions about my baseline 1st fillup

I got the VX home, and it is runnning rough in lean burn. It has the wrong spark plugs in it: bosch. I think it is only getting about 39 MPG right now, and 100 miles on the current tank were from the previous owner. so i guess once i get the right spark plugs in her i will fill up and from then on that will be the baseline fillup?
