camshaft comparison

motorcycle engine, 1500 cc 6cyl. calif. and 49 state cam profile:
calif intake valve / 49 state intake valve
opens 5 ATDC / opens 5 BTDC
closes 40 ABDC / closes 45 ABDC

calif exhaust valve / 49 state exhaust valve
opens 40 BBDC / opens 35 BBDC
closes 5 BTDC / closes 5 ATDC

both cams have same lift. I own calif. model and am able to advance or retard cam 3 degrees. any suggestions for improving A. lowend torque, and B. fuel economy ? or preferably both? maximum torque is 96 ft lbs @ 4500 RPM 5th gear @ 55 MPH is 2500 RPM

Advance the cam for more mileage and bottom end torque, retard the cam for more top end power..

It was a fairly common observation when I was learning about cars in the late sixties that old small block Chevys ran stronger on the top end when they got a lot of miles on them.. It took me many years to figure out that as the cam chains wore and got stretched the cam timing was retarded..

I can't imagine that you would pick up enough torque/mileage by swapping stock cams to begin to save enough fuel to pay for the parts and trouble swapping them..

Not to mention that putting a new cam on old lifters is going to be a possible source of trouble..
