I had a FIAT 126 as well. One of the original Italian made ones. 594 cc engine. Great fun to drive. You had to treat it like a big truck!

Was thinking of buying a Fiat, but better sense got me into a Subaru. Problem was that Subaru had poorly designed head gaskets. Shoulda bought a Datsun B210.... oh, why didn't I !!!!

Cars have got bigger yea, but on the flip side, engines have got smaller and yet more powerful too. No need for big engines anymore, they just waste resources, add weight and burn more fuel. Even SUVs like the Suzuki Vitara has a 1.0 litre engine, and the seven seater Peugeot 5008 has a 1.2 litre 3 cylinder engine. More than adequate.

IIRC a B210 - maybe the 'Honey Bee" in my memory (such as it is) was fuel efficient but not too swift.

I think I had a corvette back then.

My present car has a motorcycle sized 4-cylinder (1.4) and can get fuel numbers almost as good as my late lamented VW TDI JSW 6M.

The problem with the little turbo engines in big cars is that unless you intentionally drive for fuel economy, you won't see much of a gain. They're really good for marketing a number and gaming the regs.
