FE guage as grade detector. useful?

Watching the mpg display I've gotten real good at identifying which way roads slope even when they look flat. A long stretch of seemingly perfectly level farmland will reveal a 4mpg difference going opposite directions with no wind.

Is there any way to exploit this?

Since all trips are a closed loop to my house eventually I have to climb just as much as I fall. Avoiding steep climbs is obvious but has anyone successfully used rerouting or any other technique to take advantage of these subtle slopes?

I use load driving on roads like this. I set a target speed. And then when I come up to one of these very slight grades I hold my foot steady. Let the car slow down if its going to then when I crest I back off the throttle ever so lightly. The car recovers any speed lose and sometimes increases speed. The whole time my mpg is going up or has stabilized at a good level.
