HAI ver. 1.02

I worked on improving the HAI today. I have no testing yet. I'll get some running temp results later today. Here are the pics. The material is aluminum vinyl siding coil. Its coated with a mylar armor coat on the finished side. Hope it doesn't go up in flames.





I had 3 months running the old setup and hope this improves my winter mileage. I seriously doubt I could run this in temps above 70 but will see.

Nice Setup

I predict you'll exceed your goal of 70F for your setup. With the trapped heat in the box, I can see 120+ possible.

edit: after re-reading, I see you mean running it in ambient temps of 70F.

Still, nice setup!

Results

60mph steady cruise 50 degrees ambient. 130-135 degrees
EOC'ing 4 miles last four miles of 15 mile trip 40mph max 39 degrees ambient 110 degrees

All results are taken with a car stopped engine on.

Boy do I need an SG

I think Ill rig something up for this winter; its not even halloween and its 35 degrees and has rained for like 18 out of the last 20 days Wisconsi for the lose. I thought the HAI was "busted" according to the stickied thread?

It might be I don't know. I think it works. I have no ABA testing and no scangauge. It seems to work well for saturns. I guess engine management is pretty basic on the saturn.

My car is an auto. I know my car is more likely to go into final gear at low rpms with hot air. The car seems to stay in lower gears longer with colder air.

I'd be worried about that vinyl :O. I've seen my exhaust manifold glow red hot before. I like your idea though, one of hte big 3 used this setup way back when on a "highway" car or something like that, they got extremely hot intake air, i'm not sure exactly why they wanted it, but they got it. I was thinking something like this for a heater on my car, suck air from around the exhaust manifolds, instant 1,000 heater, thats' gottta work better then 200 degree water. Sure if i get a leak I'd quickly die from carbon monoxide poisoning, but hey, thats' a chance i'm willing to take for a nice warm car haha.

It sucks air from around the exhaust manifold when the intake air is cold. A little vacuum controlled door switches to cold air.

A visit to the junkyard will surely find an intake tube the approximate diameter of the saturn's.

I don't see why you can't get a vacuum solenoid that you can rig to a switch inside the car. Then you could set the cruise control on a flat level surface, flip the switch, and watch the scangauge.

This will dispell potential criticism of your technique ("oh, you must have warmed it up/changed brands of gas".... etc)
