Absolutely not!

For the manual transmission fluid, use only Honda MTF unless your transmission is "going out" and you refuse to repair it.. If you hear a "grinding noise" coming from the transmission, especially when under load, your input shaft bearing is going out and you need to replace it asap before you destroy your transmission AND engine! (Specifically crankshaft). There is a TSB issued for the civic manual transmissions and the repair is to replace the failed/worn bearings. Just thought I should put this out there..

Input shaft bearings are common failures on the 5-speed manuals used with D-series Civics from 1992-2000. They were most common on the VX. I am assuming it is somehow related to the ultra-tall gearing on that particular model.

I bought my VX for cheap, partly because the dealer didn't know what the noise in the transaxle was. I knew it was the input shaft bearing, but bought it anyway. I drove it for a year and a half before replacing the bearing.

I'm with IJP on this one. Use only Honda-brand manual tranny fluid.

I used Honda MTF for the Honda Accord a few years ago but on the Civic I used a synthetic MTF by Redline (I think).

Shifting on the Civic has been much smoother. Although that could be the placebo affect, I'm not sure.
