Honda VX side moldings

I have noticed that several different versions of the 92-95 Honda Civics have side moldings but not the VX. If I bought some and had them put on my car, would it hurt the car's fuel efficiency? It seems like the moldings are just for looks to me. So I'm wondering if there is something I don't know or I'm missing?

They are also not on the cx model. I have seen 2 vxs that had them. They actually mount into holes that are in the car. The fenders have mounting holes also the doors do also.

My VX had them. They protect against door dings. Didn't seem to hurt mileage at all.

So I'm under the impression that if I got some, that I'd need to drill holes in the doors so they could be secured? That sound right?

The holes in the doors are oval. Possibly some 3m tape?
