To me it's like he's an inventor who's writing an open diary on his progress. He keeps tinkering and changing the system to make it work.

He's got some non-MPG stuff I find hokey, but I am sure that he would find some of my stuff hokey too.

That's what I'm expecting I'm sure most of us have made something, that didn't work as intended.... But after some modification, and application of will power, whatever you've made works - as envisioned (or something ).
