The complete smart fortwo cdi 800 cc common rail diesel engine weighs 69 kg, or about 150 lbs. It's a fair whack smoother than a large displacement one lunger would be too.....not to mention having very favourable torque characteristics (peak of 74 lbs*ft at 1800-2800 rpm).

The smart's gasoline engine is 10 kg lighter, and is also an inline three; it would be an easy transplant by the Loremo company, if they ever actually do build + sell a car. Plus they make 84 HP in turbocharged form, which would make the car a rocket!

**** a diesel Loremo. This thing would go about 100 miles per charge at 70 mph on 800 pounds of lead acid batteries. Replace with same weight of NiMH or NiCd and range would be about 250 miles; with same weight in Li Ion that range would be about 500 miles.

If this car ever gets produced, it is a realistic route to a $20k EV with 0-60 mph < 7 seconds, > 150 miles range, > 120 mph top speed.

The Loremo could use a one lunger engine and get better economy. I don't know why people are so opposed to one-lungers. I drive a Honda X650L. It has a balance shaft, and doesn't vibrate as much as one would think.

There are millions of one-lunger Japanese dirt bikes out there. Unfortunately, they're all tuned for high end power, not FE. I wish SOMEONE would make a one cylinder, long stroke 400 cc street motorcycle with with VVT and fuel injection.

Any of the Japanese manufacturers could do it. Hell, even stodgy old Harley Davison has switched to fuel injection.

That was me (or at least I did post something like that) http://www.gassavers.org/showthread....&highlight=air

At the time I posted that I designed a car that I would like to build one day, using aero principles, and it looks very similiar to this (except a bit more radical in aero design). That is why I would love to get this car

The annoying thing is, if this car puts out double the NOx emissions (in parts per million) as a Hummer, then won't be allowed. However, the Hummer will actually put out more (in grams / mile etc), although have less in terms of parts per million.

what would be the problem here? i gather from what you say that the regulations use relative rather than absolute criteria which would favor bigger engines? is this the reason why the smart had to get a different engine in the US as well? perhaps they could fit that one in....
All i know about NOx is that it's produced more when an engine burns leaner, is that correct?
at any rate the beauty of the car seems to be that it relies on aero and weight reduction rather to be build around one "yet to be invented" magical power source...

If only it wasn't burning that dirty diesel crap. Ever look at the charts for the VW TDI's? They get 50 mpg, but their emissions are worse than most SUV emissions!

That's what B100 is for. Will cut all emissions except NOx by about 90% compared to petroleum diesel, and NOx will increase about 5-10%.

Looks like consumption went up to 2.0L/100km. How much mpg is that?

Little weight – easy to move. Less weight – easier to move.

This simple physical principle, which we can experience with our own bodies on a daily basis, specially applies to sports cars. By ruthlessly exploiting this principle, thus reducing weight and air resistance, we succeeded in cutting the Loremo’s fuel consumption to just 2.0l/100km.
