New Personal Records in the Prius!

I finally filled up last night and got some great numbers. I went 1056.5 miles(NEW PR!) and pumped in 12.162 gallons(11.9 gallon tank ) for 86.9 mpg.(NEW PR!)

Wow. congrats. I went over one gallon more than my gas tank is big. Last fill up was 11.1 gallons for a 10.0 gallon tank. Beets me. I'm just lucky I didn't run out of fuel!

I had a 1 gallon can strapped into the cargo area just in case.

smart idea. I didn't! I had no idea I was running that low, though. I don't understand linearity and gas tanks. Mine is not linear which it's proven very clearly. But how can a gas tank be non-linear?

Easy, the function defining the tank cross section isn't linear

Congrats, Larry! Nice to get in another record before the foul weather gets here.

f(x) = I hate math?

you have a tank - you have gas - you have a sensor - what causes the nonlinearity? what does "function" mean.

The tank ain't the same cross sectional area all the way down. Think if a cone, the bottom half ain't got the holding power of the top half, yet from top to bottom length only, it's still half, na?

So what did you do to get such great mileage?

1993CivicVX, heres a picture:

Not all tanks are created equal, they put whatever bumps they need to in them to get them to fit with the required amount of gas.
