Our fuel expenses

I did some calculations regarding our fuel expenses for the previous 12 months.
2010 Honda Fit: 15,980.9 miles. 428.56 gallons. $1,540.32 total fuel cost. 37.29 mpg. $0.096 per mile.
2008 Honda Civic Si: 10,743.5 miles. 297.85 gallons. $1,159.41 total fuel cost. 36.07 mpg. $0.108 per mile.
1995 Honda del Sol: 7,011 miles. 170.77 gallons. $602.87 total fuel cost. 41.06 mpg. $0.086 per mile.
1996 Chevy C1500 W/T: 4,803.6 miles. 233.75 gallons. $855.28 total fuel cost. 20.55 mpg. $0.178 per mile.

TOTAL: 38,539 miles. 1,130.924 gallons. $4,157.83 total fuel cost. 34.077 mpg. $0.108 per mile.

Re: Our fuel expenses

my guess is that you drive more conservatively than your wife, or she drives more in town than you. that's in reference to the del sol being less expensive per mile than the fit.

Re: Our fuel expenses

When I drive the Fit, I get over 40 mpg as long as it is not really cold. I get right at 40 mpg when I drive it in the city, and 44-45 on the highway. In an equal car, I still get better, and more consistent mileage.

That said, the del Sol has better EPA ratings for both city and highway. She rarely drives the del Sol, and never drives the truck (I think the last time she drove it was when we test drove it). She probably put less than 250 miles on my 2008 Si.

I think that I do not drive much more conservatively than my wife. Rather, I drive more smoothly on the throttle and I do not slow down for corners as much. I also keep the car in gear when slowing for stoplights to take advantage of DFCO. My driving technique was honed in from 2 years with a Scangauge. I wish my OBD I del Sol could have one.
