My 83 Sentra got 42 MPG and could hold more people. Does Smart have anything better?

You would think that a car that small, light, and with an engine of that size, would get better mileage than it does. But maybe I'm wrong.

As most of us can beat the EPA estimates on any of our cars, there are people out there that can waste fuel in anything. Some people just do not coast. If not on the gas they are on the brakes. You can't blame the Smart Car for dumb drivers.
I went to buy potting soil at Walmart and got 36mpg going and 42mpg coming back using a 45-60mph pulse and glide in my Cavalier.

Given that many people here get substantially better mileage than EPA estimates, I wonder how a Smart would do in the hands of one of our members?

I really think I could get 70mpg out of it with some good pulse and glide action.

Guys I justed raced in the One Lap Of America during the week of May 3-10. They did have one of these Smart cars entered. I talked it over with him about his mileage and it was not getting in 40's. I think he said in the low 30's but I do not know how they were drving it. It does run 19.7 1/4 mile at 72 mph. He was drafting me at some point later in the wk and the car would go 90mph. Oh yeah our vette only get 20-22 on the highway.....

Why spring for a new car that only gets 40mpg? My 12 year old Civic does better than that, for a fraction of the cost.

I think the Smart smartly sucks. My 44 mpg nonhypermiled 99 Civic HX M/T is way better. No premium gas needed too. Would be nice to see what a hypermiler can do on one though.
