Well the 'clip-chuck' is the ticket ! Thanks for the suggestion .
Local hardware store had one for $4.99 as well as the 3/16 barb x1/4 npt fitting at $1.29 . So by doubling the price paid for the pump with the extra fittings...I got one that works correctly every time .

I have a nice joe-blow pump that works great for bike tires, easly gets them up to 100+ psi, but for car tires it's to small of a cylender, so look at the tube diamiter of the pump and get one that is larger around so you can get more volume of air compressed per stroke.
