Talking Trip Planning + Hypermile = 1/2 Price!

I didn't realize the benefits fully until today when I made a few simple calculations. I drive from NY to NH about 4 or 5 times a year, and I used to drive the highways a 75-80mph all the time for 23mpg. That route was 256 miles as logged by the GPS.

The route I now take is state routes, speeds mostly 55 but going through some towns as low as 30, 207 miles each way, and I pulled 35mpg (this is pre-scangauge also!).

I factored in $3.07 a gallon and found that round trip costs were $68.54 and $36.24 respectively. That means that with basic hypermiling, good trip planning, and a willingness to save money, I spend 53% of what I used to in gas! Factor in the tolls and that makes it less than half price to drive home now.

Next time I go that route, I will hopefully be 40+ mpg. I think it's possible since it's basically ideal roads for making good advantage of hypermiling, and the 35mpg was before I was using P&G.

Way to go GeekGuyAndy! Now, if we could the whole country to figure out what you just did, can you imagine how much OPEC would be screaming within a very short amount of time? I'll bet it probably came out pretty much the same amount of time as well. An atlas and Mapquest have been some of my more important tools in my hypermiling quest.
