Because here in Quebec we often see deadly accident during the first snow fall or two. But here, winter tire arent an option, government pass a law to force people to put them on. A good thing, since winter tire arent that expensive, well for my 13", but not much for those """"" who has some 17 inch wheels like all those automakers are putting these day, that simply a waste of a lots of things, but people just don't think about it, to much of an effort for the brain.
I disagree, I plowed my street with all season Toyos on my car, meaning I was driving through huge piles of snow cause the tread is so wide and they dont plow here(they pay ridiculous pensions instead), best tires ive ever had in the snow, well they are 150 a piece new, not 70 like the average all season tire.. My friend plows and says Toyos are the only tires that work for him.. Yes they are Japanese tires!

Additional FWD advantage: You can steer your drive wheels. If you're stuck, that means you might turn them until they can bite something. If you're sliding, that means that whatever slight amount of forward traction you have can be used to pull you straight.

With good weigh distribution, RWD can be better for climbing hills.

NotYourDay, snow tires cost about the same as all season tires. They often come with deeper tread that doesn't claim to last any longer than an all season's shallower tread. $135 for a pair of mounted snow tires with decent tread on wheels that fit your car is a good deal. You'd spend half of that getting tires mounted on wheels if you just bought used tires and had wheels laying around.

Got all seasons on the Solstice and Focus, if the ice gets really bad I air down to 20, it really helps on hills, they dont plow my street, its too small and the major road gets one shot by the city, after that your on your own. I sit there and creep along, never go faster than the speed at which you want to hit something. My WAI takes about 15 minutes to heat up unless I jump on the highway, the Focus is cold blooded.
