Camcorder as Back Up Camera?

This came up in my mirror removal thread, but I think it needs its own. How practical do you guys think getting a busted camcorder that still has the camera and screen working and then using is as a back up camera? I'd only need it when carrying loads that block my rear view mirror, so neatness wouldn't be critical. My concern is running the screen out on longer wires. I know some of those connectors have a ton of wires in them with very fine contacts. May be hard to splice into.

I used to think about doing this to create a camera sight for my rifle, with the eyepiece for viewing (mounted to something to hold it in position in front of my eye). Wasn't quite enough of a gun nut to ever do it.

I'd worry about communication between the screen and rest of the camera being bad after the extension. You may find that you reach a length where the devices just won't talk right anymore. It's like USB. It can't go over 16 feet without a repeater or a hub but it isn't because the signal is too weak, when the wire gets too long the 'yeah i'm here' signal takes too long to get back to the host and it assumes the device has been disconnected.

That is a real possibility. If the camcorder has a video in, I guess I could feed my webcam into it, just using it as a cheap screen. They go for a lot more on Ebay than I would've guessed. I saved a search on them just in case.

Does it support analog out to a tv?

You could run an RCA plug to a small tv up front.

The webcam? Yes, it does. That's how I'm checking my oil level now. Worth looking around to see if I can get one cheap.

If I want a huge 5" CRT portable TV with a video input, it's only $9, including the shipping. Even comes with a cigarette lighter adapter. Ugh. I don't think so.

I have a lousy HP digital camera here. Wish I could hook up to its little screen. Destined for the dump at some point.

You could pick up someone's stolen in-dash DVD player at the flea market. Those have aux inputs!

Strangely, when I typed "stolen in-dash DVD player" into Ebay I didn't get any results.
