I would have to guess the only reason this saves fuel is by reducing the engine's power output it thus forces the driver's foot to behave somewhat, in a backwards way.

For all that I just ease up on the gas and be done with it, but I also know it took more than a few years before I saw the light.

A FE gauge should be standard equipment in every vehicle.
