When I considered a project vehicle (had to be less than $2000), the Chevy/Geo Prizm fit the bill perfectly. Since it's essentially a re-badged, California-built Corolla, the GM emblem dropped the price to affordability, but still retained the Toyota durability and operation.

The problem was finding a 5-speed. I would find a Prizm with less than 150K miles, but it was an auto or was overpriced for the condition, etc. This was back during the $3/gallon days, so they were probably pretty hot (and before we bought the TSX -- so the 'Teg is the only project right now within the budget). Oh well :rolleyes:
