wait before we close the thread out, what kind of oil do you use?

I am currently using Pennzoil, but have used several different brands over the life of the car. 10W40 conventional. I know it has had Havoline, Advance Auto Parts which was made by Valvoline, Exxon Super Flow, Pennzoil and probably some others I can't remember right now. The reason it's on Pennzoil now is because a few years ago I ran up on guy at a flea market that had about 10 cases and I ask what he would take for all of it and he sold it for $.65 a quart. I bought the car with 146,000+ miles on it and ever since have used a quart of Slick 50 or similar additive every 50,000 miles and a bottle of No Smoke about the same thing as STP oil treatment every oil change since about 250,000 miles. Normally changed every 3,000-4,000 miles, with the exception of maybe 10 times going 5,000-8,000 when I would be very busy or forget. I have also used various brands of filters.

EVOO, but my vehicles use amsoil. :p

hahaha me too. my wife wont even buy other oils.... kinda annoying when i want to pan sear tuna steaks because it has a lower smoking point.....

Eww Pennzoil. When I worked at a shop that was the mechanics most hated brand because of the sludge it would quickly accumulate if the oil change intervals were not strictly followed.

I just used seafoam in my intake and gas tank two weeks ago. When I put it into my intake it didn't smoke much, some light stuff for about 2 minutes, so I don't think my engine was that dirty (even with 165k miles). When I put it into my gas tank, though, my engine would run a little funny right on startup but as it warmed a little it was fine. Now that I've finished that tank it's running just fine, but I'm thinking it may have lowered my fuel economy. On the next tank I got the worst work-drive-only fuel tank I've ever gotten. I thought it was supposed to maybe improve mileage due to cleaning the injectors, but I guess not. Maybe it fouled up my spark plugs a little or something, but my engine runs really smooth so I don't know.

when you put it in the intake your supposed to have the engine running, pour it in and keep pouring in till near stalling point. then once 1/3 or so of the can is gone shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes, then restart and go for a spirited drive

I've always heard Quaker State was bad about causing lots of sludge, so I've never used it. I think a lot of the filth in my engine came from the car being driven around on dusty construction sites for about 13 years. I didn't just drive it to the site and park it I drove around over the site in it sometimes when the dust was an 1" or more deep, at times when it would be real dry from no rain in several weeks or even months. The valve train was nasty long before I ever started using the Pennzoil.

Yeah Quaker State was the other bad one. I think they rated that even worse than Pennzoil.

ive heard those cheaper oils arent to great, personally i use castrol GTX conventional and high mileage. havent had any problems.

what was funny is when i pulled my model A engine it had probably 60 year old oil in it, had about an inch of sludge the rest was rather liquidy. sure preserved everything nicely. sure was stinky tho...:P

I think I have about 3-4 cases of the Pennzoil left. Whenever it runs out I'll switch it over to something else. I have about 20 cases of other various brands of oil that I bought prior to the price going so high. I think I have Mobile, Citgo, Exxon and Shell. I bought the Citgo at a Dollar General Store when they had their grand opening. They were using that as one of their grand opening specials at $.50 a quart. I'm currently using the Exxon in the '97 Escort so I'll probably just use the rest of it in that car since that is what I've used in it ever since it was new and put the '88 on something else.
