Fueleconomy.gov won't share my data?
 

I posted my consumption data of 18 fill-ups dating back to June on www.fueleconomy.gov Monday. I have opted to have my data shared. I checked today and my data is still not shared.

42MPG average is too high to be included? No "problems" reported with my data.

The site reports user-experienced MPG maxing at 37MPG. In list all data, my entry 10-6-08 for a 2008 Hyundai Accent, manual, doesn't show. Interesting...

I think it took about a week before my data was shared. Give it some time.

Is it Monday yet?

Hmmm.... they must post data on the weekend... a user posted their car's data on Friday, the 3rd. That data was there when I joined Monday the 6th.

I'll just wait and see.

Edit: that guy's/gal's data was "updated" the 3rd. I'm sooo impatient... not a virtue of a HM'er.

Recently the administrator of this website was contacted by Andrew Beck, Chief Spokesperson for the US Department of Energy. His inquiry was regarding a Hyundai that was attempting to post some seemingly fraudulent gas mileage records (presumably this would be you), and he was suspicious that this was a ploy by Hyundai Corporation to boost the market perception of Hyundai by reporting artificially high gas mileage.

We replied to Mr. Beck and informed him of the purpose of our site, and that most (all?) members here typically get 10-50% better mileage than EPA specifications, using a combination of aerodynamics, driving method, and engine modifications, and that this was not an implausible claim.

He then responded that he could not include this data set since it did not represent the "real world" expectations for a vehicle, using an average driver and real-world driving conditions with unmodified vehicles. We tried to persuade him that similar results are attainable by any other driver if they wanted to put forth the time and effort, hoping that the website would get some publicity. Unfortunately we didn't receive a response.

On my fillups my 23 MPG fillup is flagged with a red exclamation point as having a possible error.

If they are doing their homework, they will throw out the top and bottom 5% of data they receive. Their goal is to show the fuel economy of the average driver not hypermilers.

I don't think they should filter it. They already show a "range" of MPG's that drivers report. Why not let people know what's possible?

Because again, it would be misleading for the average driver. No doubt that he Hyundai Accent can be driven very efficiently. But without a way to tell show how you archived those numbers, the information is useless. Also I think they want to guard against people that are biased or misleading one way or another. Generally those results would be in the top and bottom 5% of responses. This is normal practice in a lot of statistical analysis.
